Rising Stars: Meet Tania Vergara Pérez

Tania Vergara, born in Cuba in 1968, is a distinguished dance artist who founded Ballet Contemporáneo Endedans in Camagüey in 2002, blending classical, contemporary, and theatrical dance. Moving to the United States in 2014, she launched Endedans Contemporary Ballet with the support of four women, marking its U.S. debut in Sarasota in 2023. The company celebrated National Women’s Month with performances dedicated to notable writers and was named the Best New Dance Company of 2023. Despite challenges like financing and lack of a permanent base, Tania remains committed to her artistic vision, creating works that entertain, provoke thought, and explore complex themes through dance.

Sarasota Cuban Ballet School Summer Intensive

Vergara Pérez studied ballet for eight years while growing up in Camagüey, Cuba. After receiving her dance degree, she taught at Cuba’s prestigious National Ballet School from 1986 to 2013. She also founded the Cuban contemporary dance company Endedans, for which she was also the director and choreographer. After moving to the U.S. in 2014, she started teaching at the School of Ballet Arts in Lake Worth before joining the faculty of the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School. She has since become a sought-after (and award-winning) choreographer across the U.S. and Cuba.

The first half of the show ended with a long, but imaginative contemporary work by Vergara, “The Swans Are Still Alive,” which filled the stage with more than 70 dancers, male and female alike in stiff white tutus. That anyone could put that many bodies on stage without a disaster is astounding in itself, but Vergara also has a knack for creating dramatic and arresting visual works that don’t skimp on the wow factor.
